It can also create one of the most difficult project schedules to control.
The appeal is obvious: the aircraft is already out of service, panels and interior components may already be removed, and the owner can return to service with maintenance, cabin and technology work completed in one event.
The risk is assuming that two large work scopes automatically behave like one coordinated project.
Maintenance and Refurbishment Have Different Kinds of Uncertainty
Refurbishment can be planned extensively before induction. Materials can be selected, engineering advanced and vendors scheduled.
Heavy maintenance contains a different variable: findings.
Once inspections begin, discrepancies can create new parts requirements, engineering dispositions, structural work and schedule changes. Those findings can hold areas of the aircraft open that the interior team needs closed.
A credible combined schedule therefore needs decision points and interface milestones, not simply two schedules laid on top of each other.
Define Who Owns the Master Schedule
When maintenance, interior, paint, avionics and connectivity teams are all involved, someone must manage the integrated critical path.

If cabin sidewalls are out, it may be an efficient time to route connectivity wiring. If the aircraft is already scheduled for significant downtime, a paint event may fit without creating a separate future grounding.
But efficiencies should be identified and priced before induction rather than assumed.

A major maintenance finding can consume schedule margin and budget contingency intended for the cabin project.
Owners should maintain visibility into the two scopes separately even when they share one redelivery date. That allows the team to see whether cost growth originates in maintenance, refurbishment or an interface between them.
It also helps make intelligent tradeoffs if recovery becomes necessary.
Plan the Reassembly Sequence Early
Late projects often become crowded projects.
As redelivery approaches, multiple teams may be trying to close the aircraft simultaneously. This is where workmanship can suffer, access conflicts appear and testing gets compressed.
The reassembly and test plan should be considered from the beginning: interior installation, system power-up, cabin management testing, connectivity validation, maintenance operational checks, weight and balance, ground runs, flight checks where required and final cosmetic inspection.
The Owner’s Decision Is About Total Downtime
A combined event should be evaluated against the alternative.
If separating the projects creates two predictable six-week groundings, combining them into one uncertain twelve- or fourteen-week event may not actually improve owner utility. Conversely, one well-planned combined event may eliminate months of cumulative downtime over the next operating cycle.
